- Selenus Bone Set -
I was lucky to acquire this set with a nice marble board included very cheaply from eBay. It was poorly photographed and described. I imagine this is a pretty late set as German Selenus sets go, late 19th or even early 20th century. I'm guessing this because the minor pieces and rooks appear strongly influenced by the Staunton design or possibly English pre-Staunton signatures. The knight heads are somewhat better than those in a typical Selenus set. As always, if anyone could better date this set or offer information about it, please email me.
Bone Selenus Set.
Minor pieces.
Soft focus on white angelic white royalty.
Floral crowns catch the light.
Black royalty. I've repaired the feather atop the black king. I wasn't able to make it stand quite straight.
White castle.
Queen's at a distance.
I find the warn-off black die, typical of antique Selenus sets, particularly beautiful.
Minor pieces.
Dark knight.
Representative pieces.
More minor pieces. Good knights...
...but unlike most other styles sets, the Selenus king and queen, not the knights, are the real show-pieces.
