- Boxwood Regence -
This is one of my first sets, a typical example of the Regency design in boxwood with one side finished black to resemble ebony. It probably dates from the 20th century, c.1940s. These are a bit hard to come by in this large size, kings 4", but they are by no means rare.
A Typical early 20th century Regency set.
Morning sun.
Black royalty.
Notice the competing pawn chains of the French Defense chess opening.
I believe I've used positions from the French Defense in just about all of shots of this French set.
White minor pieces.
The Winawer.
A fierce battle!
Evening falls.
Notice the rhyming finials of the queen bishop and pawn, highlighted when Regence sets are arranged by height, not piece order.
Meanwhile kings and queens have urn-shaped bodies while minor pieces have beads. Rooks and pawns have low beads. I could talk more about these overalapping motives. A lot of interest enters the form because of the irregular overlap. The three pieces with the same top are not the two with the same bodies, etc...
