- Ebony St. George Set -

Here is a fine 19th century St. George set in boxwood and ebony which I purchased from eBay seller 5881pat. I would recommend dealing with this seller. One black pawn had been poorly replaced (clearly photographed in listing.)  I had Alan Dewey make a better ebony pawn to match the set. The repair is indistinguishable except for the mark of the parting tool on the underside of the piece. This set features particularly fine turning on royal pieces and bears the interesting feature of opposite color marks atop king side knights and rooks, something like Jaques crowns on early Staunton sets to track which knight and rook are which before the days of algebraic chess notation. As I understand it the kingside marks were an invention of Jaques. I'd not seen this sort of mark in a St. George set at all before this one. If you have information on these marks or otherwise want to talk about this set I'd love to see an email. Kings 3 1/8". Here are some images of my ebony St. George.
