- Gypsum Lewis Set-
I have a Lewis set made from cast gypsum cement which I purchased from 'the plastered pawn' eBay store. Overall I would not recommend this set. They are, as I'm sure you can see, one of the most beautiful copies of the Lewis pieces available, but the material is just not durable. This set did not last a year without major chipping, and I have not used it heavily. I would recommend, instead, spending the extra money and get a resin set like the Studio Anne Carlton version. Of course what I would do if I had it to do over again is make my own Lewis copy in resin. The molds are easily available. I may still do this someday. The first chess pieces I made in resin were cold-cast metal of Lewis inspired designs. Anyway, here are some pictures of the gypsum Lewis set:
This position is from an extremely sharp line in the Vienna Game chess opening. The shepherd who found these pieces thought they were scary. Take a look at them now.
I'm particularly impressed with The Plastered Pawn's finish on the black pieces.
A King's Gambit, the most romantic of chess openings for these ancient pieces. It appears there is something particularly holy about the white king's bishop.
The solemn black bishop.
This shot reminds me a scene from 'The Two Towers' 'Lord of the Rings' movie.
