- House of Staunton Players Series -
I finally broke down and got a high quality Staunton Set. This is a 'Players' Series' set from the House of Staunton in boxwood and rosewood. This is, of course, a 2005-2006 contemporary set from India. HOS deals in antiques as well, but the price is much higher of course. Someday I'd like to own a Jaques set, or at least an early Staunton set with crown signatures on kingside knight and rook, but the price my forever prohibit me from buying such things. These new HOS sets are every bit as high in quality as some Jaques sets, but they are affordable. The players' series is an extra heavy design, made to stand up to the ware and tear of play. The Staunton design itself was created out of a need for practicality. This set, designed for play, takes that practicality to the next level. It is a finely carved work of art, but I need not fear to take it out and play a few games with it.
