- Lotus Set -
This is a contemporary Indian version of the old Selenus design. I have seen this design referred to as German Canopy as well as Lotus. I think the Lotus title is clearer in this context as I've sat it next to sets which really are German. There are sellers on eBay who try to pass these off as antiques, which of course they are not. They are high quality sets, however. This one is carved in red sandalwood and boxwood and comes from the Canadian Yipparo Co. eBay store. I would recommend those of us on this side of the world do business with them for our Indian reproduction designs. Their prices are competitive and it is just plain easier to deal with them than people in India. I don't want feed a stereotype, but every Canadian I've ever spoken with has been incredibly kind. That said, I have not tried to purchase a set like this directly from India, and there are quite a few Indian sellers out there with low prices. If you look at this beside my other Selenus sets you will start to get an eye for telling antiques from Indian reproductions. 20th-21st century Indian carving is not always so far removed from the original inspiration as it is in this case, but the style is similar across the board. In any event, this a high quality contemporary set.
The red sandalwood is particularly beautiful.
