- Miniature Horn Regence Set-
I acquired this tiny horn Regence set in another lucky eBay deal. The set is much smaller than you might expect. Kings are a mere 1.5 inches. These sets come from 20th century Vietnam. The French design rubbed off during the occupation, but the Vietnamese brought to the design carved horn and mother of pearl. Black pieces are water buffalo horn. White pieces are cattle horn. Sets like this exist in several sizes. I have recently acquired a full-size version of this set. This particular set is interesting in that the queens are the tallest pieces, taller than the kings. Is this a reflection of the relative offensive power of the pieces or possibly some kind of feminist statement?

Impressive carving. Quite a tiny white knight. (Say that ten times fast.)
