- Syntek 1972 'Cubist' Set -
Early in my collecting I ran across a striking metal set. Bidding went quite high and I let it go. Recently I'm learning good things come to those who wait. The second time around I had a shot a it cheap. Sometimes you get lucky... of course in this case I had to wait a few years for luck. The set is a heavy metal which seems stronger than pewter. The copyright "Syntek 1972" is etched on the base of some of the pawns. I know very little about this set, not even if it was made by Synergistic Technologies US, or if the Syntek Global fuel company made promotional a chess set. As always I'd appreciate any information anyone has about this set. I've included it in the Staunton section because it basically a Staunton, with a lot of freedom taken to stylize the design. Kings 5-1/8".
Syntek 1972 Cubist Chess Set
Kings.
Queens.
The Bishops are adorned with large crosses instead of the normal mitre.
The knights rear up for combat.
Rooks resemble something out of the Lord of Rings trilogy.
Pawns.
Shimmering silver army.
Black iron forces engaged in combat.
I couldn't resist a few "Biblical" shots of the triple cross.
A pawn base with the copyright, not legible in the picture.
The diamond bases, the same size on every piece, fit together in their own "chessboard" pattern.
I'm sure my collector friend Guy Lyons would love the pieces set up in this fashion. (Joke.)
You can almost read the copyrights on these pawns, whose smaller bases make their own checkerboard huddle.
