- Austrian Coffeehouse Set -

Here is a typical wooden Austrian "Coffeehouse" or "Old Vienna" set. The box these came in is marked "Heinrich Jacobi: Drechslerwaaren Spiel - u. Rach-Requisiten Spielkarten: Wien Wieden, ketternbruckerngasse 18" but I'm not sure it goes with the set.  On the one hand it's Viennese and so is the set. On the other hand the pieces all have holes in the bottom, which I believe suggests they came from a compendium, though it would have to be quite a large compendium for these 3.5 inch kings. I haven't photographed the box. Here is the set:

A Viennese Coffeehouse set by Heinrich Jacobi?

A position from the Vienna Gambit chess opening.

The Black side of the opening.

Opposite color bishops take center stage in this position.

Dark knight.

Royal pieces.

Opposite color Bishops.

Knights.

These Knights have well carved manes, actually not uncommon for these sets.

Rooks.

Pawns.

An interesting, unique, practical design which has lasted longer than any other pre-Staunton to be used (as far as I know) in Austrian Coffee House even today.
